Microdermabrasion Skin Resurfacing

Genetics, aging, lifestyle factors, and external forces can all work against the quality of your skin. Even Seattle weather can be harsh on your face, leading to damage from the cold temperatures and harsh winds. If you’re hoping for smooth, clean skin, it may be time to consider microdermabrasion or other medpsa treatments overseen by Bellevue cosmetic surgeon Dr. Alex Sobel.

What Can Microdermabrasion Treat?

Microdermabrasion is an excellent way to reverse skin damage, excessive dryness, and even some signs of aging. The process of cell renewal (exfoliation) is a natural process that slows with age. Uniform removal of the superficial dead cells thickens the epidermis, increases the production of new cells, and encourages the production of collagen and elastin.

Microdermabrasion Overview

Microdermabrasion was developed in Europe in 1985 and was introduced in the United States in the early 90s. Aluminum oxide crystals are projected onto the skin in a safe and uniform manner to painlessly exfoliate layers of the epidermis. These crystals, along with dead skin cells, are vacuumed into a closed filter container and discarded. A control gauge allows for increased vacuum for a more aggressive peel and decreased vacuum for a gentler peel.

What to Expect During Your Microdermabrasion Treatment

During a microdermabrasion treatment, the following occurs:

  • Blackheads are loosened
  • Whiteheads become unsurfaced
  • Hyperpigmentation lightens
  • Dead skin cells are swept away
  • Improvement of acne scars
  • Pores decrease in size
  • Epidermal wrinkles become less prominent

Blood containing oxygen and nutrients is drawn to the surface to feed and repair cells, leading to an overall brighter, smoother, and more radiant appearance. All skin types can be treated with microdermabrasion.

Recovery After Treatment

After treatment, your skin should be smooth and clean, with any residual redness fading quickly. The process of microdermabrasion should be approached in a series of at least five treatments to get a long-lasting effect. Most patients are treated every two weeks, depending on the aggressiveness of the peel.

For microdermabrasion patients, Dr. Sobel and our skincare staff recommend a healthy skincare routine, including Retin-A and prescription Hydroquinone, when needed. This is imperative for long lasting improvement and maintenance of your microdermabrasion results.
