Empowering Washington Women in STEM: The 2024 WISE Scholarship is Now Open!

We are thrilled to announce that applications for the WISE (Women in STEM Excel) Scholarship opened on October 1st! We believe in the transformative power of education and the importance of fostering diversity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, and Dr. Sobel established the scholarship to help alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with higher education.

Why the WISE Scholarship matters

The demand for skilled professionals in STEM is higher than ever, yet women remain underrepresented. Encouraging more women to enter these industries promotes both gender equality and also brings diverse perspectives that drive innovation and problem-solving. It’s more important than ever to support women who aspire to make groundbreaking contributions in STEM fields.

Bellevue cosmetic surgeon Dr. Alex Sobel has always been a passionate advocate for women’s education. Recognizing that financial obstacles should not stand in the way of talented individuals, the scholarship awards a $3,500 cash prize to one deserving female student to support her journey toward making significant contributions in her chosen field.

Supporting women in STEM contributes to a richer pool of talent and creativity that benefits society as a whole.

Who can apply

The WISE Scholarship is open to female residents of the state of Washington who are pursuing education in a STEM-related field at an institution of higher learning. Eligible STEM subjects include, but are not limited to:

• Chemistry
• Computer and Information Technology Science
• Engineering
• Healthcare and Medical Sciences
• Biological Sciences
• Mathematical Sciences
• Physics and Astronomy
• Social Sciences
• STEM Education and Learning Research

The WISE Scholarship continues to empower Washingtonian women pursuing degrees in STEM for the seventh consecutive year.

How to apply

Each applicant is required to complete the application form with original essay answers and submit one letter of recommendation with valid contact information. 

Application timeline

• Application period open: Tuesday, October 1, 2024
• Application deadline: Friday, December 13, 2024
• Review period: Monday, December 16, 2024, to Friday, December 27, 2024
• Winner announced: Monday, January 20, 2025

Our Scholarship Selection Committee will review all submissions and select the winner based on merit and the successful completion of all application requirements.
