Awake Liposuction: What to Know About Lipo Without General Anesthesia
Liposuction is known for its safe, consistent, and permanent fat removal results. It has long been the go-to body contouring procedure to refine and enhance nearly every part of the body. But did you know that “awake liposuction” is quickly becoming the preferred technique by many patients to target unwanted fat?
Liposuction is one of my favorite body contouring procedures to perform, and here, I share what you need to know about the “awake” technique.
What makes “awake” liposuction different?
For all tumescent liposuction techniques, the process begins with injecting a solution—which contains a strong anesthetic like lidocaine—into the targeted fat tissue. The numbing fluid suspends fat cells for faster, easier removal.
The “awake” liposuction technique is different in that it uses a high concentration of numbing medicine, allowing patients to remain conscious and comfortable throughout the procedure. In contrast, traditional liposuction techniques are usually performed under general anesthesia, meaning patients are put to sleep for the procedure and thus have a longer recovery period and typically need to manage more side effects.
Awake liposuction allows your surgeon to “sculpt” curves in real time since you will be able to change positions fluidly.
The advantages of staying awake
Aside from avoiding the side effects, downtime, and potential risks associated with general anesthesia, patients have the ability to change positions fluidly during the procedure. This dynamic movement allows me to sculpt the body in real time, enhancing natural shadows and curves; achieving these results can be more challenging when you are under general anesthesia.
Is “awake” liposuction safe?
Safety is a top priority in any surgical procedure, and “awake” liposuction is no exception. Because this technique does not require you to be put to sleep, general anesthesia risks such as allergic reactions, breathing problems, or other complications are not a concern, making “awake” lipo technically safer for the right patient. The numbing fluid also has antibacterial properties to further reduce infection risks.
Patient comfort and procedure day experience
My goal is to make sure my patients feel safe, and depending on their personal preferences, I’ll explain as much or as little as they want. I have some patients who feel more secure with a play-by-play of everything I’m doing, and others are more comfortable with a nurse’s hand to hold and the assurance that everything is going well. Whatever you need from me and my Seattle cosmetic surgery team is what we will provide.
While liposuction is surgery and should be approached with meticulous care, your surgery day is also cause for a joyous celebration! It’s when I have the honor of bringing your aesthetic vision to life and helping you feel more confident in your body. And for those who need a little extra support, we always offer anti-anxiety medication so you can enjoy your day.
Ideal candidates for “awake” liposuction
The ideal candidate for “awake” liposuction is someone with a lower body fat percentage seeking advanced body contouring. I can determine if this technique can safely and comfortably achieve the results you are looking for during a one-on-one consultation.
What you can expect during “awake” liposuction
Before starting your procedure, I’ll outline the treatment area to guide me as I sculpt your new contours. Once you are completely numb, I’ll begin removing precise amounts of fat and, depending on the location, help you change positions to remove fat deposits to enhance your unique anatomy. At no point will you be required to view the procedure; we can use modesty drapes for privacy, or you can close your eyes. You’ll be able to talk to me and my wonderful surgical staff throughout the entire process.

Can you do awake lipo while breastfeeding?
Hi Britany, Thank you for your question. It’s generally advised to be cautious with any elective procedures like liposuction while breastfeeding. The primary concern is the impact of local anesthetics used during awake liposuction on breast milk and whether they can be transferred to the baby. It’s important to discuss this with your surgeon during a consultation, as they can give you detailed information based on the specific anesthetics used and your individual health. They can also help you determine the best timing for the procedure to ensure both your safety and the well-being of your baby.
